A character from a film is asked who he was and the man answers that today he is not the man he was yesterday. He adds that the person asking the question won’t be tomorrow the person he is today. He evades the question and does it for a reason. He does not know. No one does.
According to the director Toomas Suuman, “A Drunkard Rode the Train” is a story of yearning. The protagonist Venitshka is on his way from Moscow to Petushinskiy to meet his girlfriend, but the cruel fate throws obstacles in his way and Ventishka does not know how and where he will end up. The wind blowing in the stairwells and train stations pushes Ventishka through the world, accompanied by people and angels. Ventishka is pushed through the world which he does not only look at but sees as only a truly free person can see.
The title of the play, “A Drunkard Rode the Train” is a quotation from Jerofejev’s wife from the time her husband’s poem was circling underground and had become famous all around Russia. Once an eager officer had asked Jerofejev’s wife what the famous and mysterious piece was about. The wife allegedly answered that it is about nothing really special, simply about a drunkard riding the train...
