Kuressaare City Theatre – “The God of Carnage”

(Le dieu du carnage)
By Yasmina Reza

Translator: Margus Alver
Director: Jaak Allik
Design: Jaak Vaus (guest from Ugala Theatre)
Cast: Kersti Kreismann (guest from Estonian Drama Theatre), Sulev Teppart, Piret Rauk, Jüri Aarma.

The son of the Reille’s, Ferdinand, has punched Bruno, the son of the Houille’s, and broken two of his front teeth. In order to settle the quarrel, two Parisian middle-class married couples meet. As the evening, which started out pleasantly, progresses, tension builds up. Masks are pulled off,  value judgements are revealed and aspects of private relationships are disclosed.  Everyone can probably recognise themselves in several of these situations. Reza claims that she writes humorous tragedies but both the audience and critics take them as quality comedies. “The God of Carnage” undoubtedly contains a healthy dose of humour, but the aim of the author and the director is to make the audience think. To think about what? Perhaps about the fragility of marriage.

Yasmina Reza (1959) has been named the superstar of European theatres and right now she is the most-played French playwright who has also received all the most important French and English drama prizes.
