“Between Satire and Propaganda. European Perspectives on Society, Politics and Theatre” What is political theatre? Is political theatre only propaganda? Satire? Cabaret? Does political theatre change the society? There exist as many different understandings and forms of political theatre as there are people who deal with political theatre. At the conference theatre practitians, theoreticians and the audience will meet to discuss the different ideas on political theatre. In addition to the Estonian participants we are happy to present guests from Germany. Matthias Naumann is a theatre theoretician from Goethe University Frankfurt, who is writing his PhD thesis on political theatre in Germany and Israel. At the conference Naumann will present a theoretical view on the notion “political theatre”. Alex Karschnia founded an international performance-collective andcompany&Co in 2003. Karschnia is a performer, texter and theoretician who writes about and for theatre. He wrote his PhD thesis on Heiner Müller under the supervision of Hans-Thies Lehmann. Karschnia lives and works in Berlin. andcompany&Co combines theatre and theory, politics and practice. Their performances are a humorous game with facts and fiction, they mix music, literature, philosophy, theatre theory, politics, fine arts, pop culture etc. More information: HYPERLINK "http://www.andco.de" www.andco.de Estonian perspectives on political theatre are opened by the historian Linda Kaljundi and the theatre theoretician Luule Epner. Kaljundi looks at the political history themes presented in the Estonian theatre, Epner talks about the actor and acting in political theatre: „What does the actor do in political theatre?“ The presentation deals with the actor and acting in political theatre (actor and the role, actor as a citizen, play vs authenticity etc.). The director Peeter Jalakas talks about apolitical theatre: can theatre be apolitical at all; if yes, then what kind of a theatre is this and who and why deals with it. The conference takes place on Thursday, 10th September 2009 at 10 AM in Athena, Tartu. The conference is free of charge. All the presentation will be in English with translation. The conference is organized in cooperation with The Union of Estonian Theatre Researchers, Festival DRAAMA 2009, German Culture Institute / Goethe Institute More information from organizers: Madli Pesti (madlip@ut.ee) and Monika Eppelt "monika.eppelt@yahoo.com) |
