During the first independent Republic of Latvia Riga does not feature only Jugendstil houses in the city centre, Press balls at Mrs. Benjamin or satiated and prosperous Latvians who have become masters of their country.
The trilogy „Bille” by Vizma Belsevica is an autobiographic novel of the outstanding Latvian poetess and it provides the insight into another atmosphere of Riga - workers' flat in a rented building in Grizinkalns (GrÄ«ziņkalns), bare feet, dark bread, noisy neighbours, poverty, a firm necessity for cleanness and order, but above all this – a dream about Latvia, pride for the new country, belief that it is possible to do anything by one's own hands.
